Some people are blessed with such exuberance and zest for living that nothing can keep them down, not even advancing age.
That's how it was with Iva Valentine Schulmeier, who 10 days before her death was still spinning across the dance floor with her husband.
Schulmeier, 91, died of natural causes at her home in Broken Arrow, Okla., early Saturday.
Her funeral will take place today at 3 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel at 1701 Austin Highway. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
Schulmeier, who lived in San Antonio until a few years ago, always liked challenges, whether it was painting her house her favorite color - pink - or driving fast in a sporty car.
"You couldn't tell her not to do something because she would do it," said her daughter, Diana Schulmeier of Broken Arrow.
Some of the things Schulmeier did left some people gasping although most applauded her blithe spirit.
That included standing on her head at the weddings of her children and grandchildren.
What started as a lark became a family tradition, Schulmeier's daughter said.
"She stood on her head because she could do it," Diana Schulmeier said. "Someone told her she couldn't do it and she did. She enjoyed herself."
Her first husband, Willis Lee, died in 1963.
Other survivors include her husband, Alton J. Schulmeier; sons George Lee and Willis "Bill" Lee, both of San Antonio; three stepchildren, Floyd Schulmeier of Tulsa, Okla., Darleen Lange of St. Hedwig and Aline Wallace of Cuba, Ill.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
